SUHAE sells shower filters. This guide separates general category information from our product-specific claims and links to the available evidence. About SUHAE Australia.

Category-level comparisons

Comparisons describe common filter types and buying considerations. Product performance varies by brand, model and test conditions.

What does a shower filter actually do?

A shower filter can reduce chlorine compounds and, depending on its media, filter some particles or metals. Standard shower filters do not soften water.

Why it cannot fix limescale

Your water arrives with a disinfectant residual in it, put there on purpose so the water is still safe at the end of a long pipe network. A filter deals with that residual in the two metres between the wall and you.

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Taking it out needs ion exchange and a tank, which is a whole-of-house job rather than something that fits on a shower arm. If a filter is being sold to you as a fix for limescale, that is worth a second look.

It is also not a water treatment device for anything you drink.

What should you compare in a shower filter?

Compare the filtration media, measured flow rate, cartridge life, fitting compatibility and any added fragrance or minerals.

A filter drawn in section with three chambers of very different depth stacked inside it.

Three stages, drawn to scale. A body of media, a thin layer, and a washer.

The media, and how it works

Stage count does not show how well a filter performs. Check the material, quantity, order and published test evidence for each stage.

Adsorption, chemical reduction, and which is which

Adsorption holds contaminants on a surface. Activated carbon is the common one: it works well on free chlorine, it needs contact time, and it eventually fills up.

Chemical reduction converts the disinfectant instead, and the media is consumed rather than filled. Calcium sulfite, copper-zinc redox media and ascorbic acid all work this way.

The distinction matters most for chloramine, which is harder for standard carbon at shower contact times. The longer explanation is here, and what is inside ours is here.

Flow rate

Flow rate affects shower feel and the time water spends in contact with the filter media. Compare figures measured on the complete installed product.

Radiance and Nourish only

5.0 litres a minute, tested to AS/NZS 3662:2013 by Singapore Laboratory Services rather than by the manufacturer. How the plate does it.

Why less water is not less filtration

A head that moves less water gives the media longer to work, not less. Each drop spends proportionally longer in it.

When a brand claims higher pressure, check whether the figure comes from an independent report, manufacturer testing or an unmeasured description.

Cartridge life

Cartridge life depends on water volume and household use. Look for a tested litre capacity or a clear monthly estimate with its assumptions.

Fittings

Check the thread type, available space, product weight and whether your shower is fixed, handheld or overhead.

Whether it adds anything back

Some cartridges add fragrance or minerals. Choose these features deliberately and check whether an unscented option is available.

What does a chlorine removal percentage actually mean?

A removal percentage is useful only when the test states the flow rate, temperature, water chemistry, sample and testing body.

Two panels. Media sitting in a beaker of water, and beside it water passing through a shower head.

Both can be reported as a percentage. Water sits with the media in a beaker for close to a minute. It passes a showerhead in a fraction of a second. The full argument, and our answer to it.

Look for four things next to any figure.

  • The flow rate it was measured at, in litres per minute, written L/min.
  • The water temperature.
  • Free chlorine or chloramine in the test water. They are not equally easy.
  • Who ran the test, by name.

Use the same evidence standard for every brand and every product.

What is NSF/ANSI 177, and what does it not cover?

The American standard for shower filtration. It certifies reduction of free chlorine. It does not certify chloramine reduction, hardness, or heavy metals.

Check certification at product level

Search the certifier’s public database for the exact product model. A brand-level certification claim may refer to a different product.

NSF/ANSI 177 covers free chlorine, not chloramine

If your utility uses chloramine, review separate evidence for chloramine performance rather than treating free-chlorine certification as equivalent.

And watch the adjacent claim

Certification means an independent body has tested the product against a written protocol and continues to audit it, which is more than an in-house test.

A brand may hold a certification on a drinking water product and describe itself as certified. Ask which standard, which product, and which certifying body.

How much does a shower filter cost to run per year?

Annual running cost equals the cartridge price multiplied by the number of replacements your household needs each year.

Running cost calculator
One replacement cartridge, delivered.
If the brand gives a range, use the lower end.
Optional, for the first year rather than the ongoing one.
AUD $179.40 Cartridges only, per year.

Numbers stay in your browser. The default values are Suhae's own refill, so the first number you see is ours.

Two things that distort this calculation

When cartridge life is shown as a range, use the shorter interval for a conservative cost estimate.

If a subscription discount is offered, check the delivery frequency, cancellation terms and whether you can skip a shipment.

Compare both the upfront product price and the ongoing cartridge cost. A lower purchase price can cost more over time if replacements are frequent or expensive.

Do I have a hard water problem or a disinfectant problem?

Hardness and disinfectant are different water issues. Check your utility data before choosing a shower filter.

The difference, and where hardness is genuinely a factor

Hardness comes from dissolved calcium and magnesium and can leave white mineral marks. Standard shower filters do not soften water.

Australian water utilities use disinfectants such as chlorine or chloramine to protect the supply. Shower-filter media may be designed to reduce these compounds at the shower outlet.

Full table, disinfectant type and hardness by city, each sourced to the utility that publishes it: the chemistry page.

How long does a shower-filter cartridge last?

Cartridge life depends on water volume, household shower use and local water conditions. Most products provide an estimated interval rather than an end-of-life indicator.

  • Note the date you installed it.
  • Note the date you noticed a change.
  • The gap is your household's real cartridge life, and it beats anything on the box.
Why the published figure varies so much

Use the manufacturer’s service interval as a guide and choose a conservative replacement date for heavier household use. A tested litre capacity provides a clearer comparison when available.

Will it fit an Australian shower?

Compatibility depends on the thread, available space and whether your shower is fixed, handheld or overhead.

A shower arm with a filter and head below it, and two dimension lines marking the space to measure.

Measure the clearance below your shower arm before you order. The filter adds length in line with the fitting.

Check the weight and cradle angle

An attachment can add weight or length near a handheld cradle. Check the available clearance and whether the head stays at your preferred angle.

Renting?

There is more on install and moving out on the renters page.

What should I ask before I buy?

Use these eight questions to compare performance evidence, fit, cartridge cost and support before you buy.

  • What is the media made of? Not how many stages. What each one contains.
  • At what flow rate and temperature was the removal figure measured? If it is not on the page, the figure is decorative.
  • Who ran the test? A named laboratory, or an in-house claim.
  • Free chlorine or chloramine? Then check which one your city uses.
  • Is the cartridge life one number or a range? Litres is the honest unit.
  • What does a year of cartridges cost? The calculator above takes ten seconds.
  • Does it add anything to the water? Minerals or fragrance.
  • What happens if it does not work for me? Returns window, postage, whether a used cartridge voids it.

8. What warranty and returns terms apply?

SUHAE publishes a lifetime warranty on eligible shower hardware, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Review the full warranty and returns terms before ordering.

Is a shower filter worth it?

Start with the water issue you want to address

A shower filter can be a practical upgrade when its media, test evidence and fitting match your local water and bathroom.

Use a clear before-and-after observation

If your shower water changed after a move or while travelling, compare the local utility data and track a practical measure such as chlorine smell or wash frequency.

How to assess a performance claim

Check whether a percentage names the product, testing body, method, flow rate, temperature and water chemistry.

If you live in a soft-water area, choose a shower filter for verified disinfectant or particle reduction rather than expecting it to remove hardness.
