You are smelling the disinfectant your utility leaves in the supply on purpose. Whether it reaches you in the steam depends on which kind your city runs.
Free chlorine and chloramine behave differently
Water utilities maintain a disinfectant residual through the network. Australian supplies commonly use free chlorine or chloramine.


Leaves the water and gets into the air
Free chlorine is volatile. Warm water and fine spray can make its smell more noticeable in an enclosed shower.
That is why the smell may be easier to notice in the shower than at the kitchen tap.


Stays dissolved in the water
Chloramine combines chlorine with ammonia and remains more stable over long pipe runs.
It is less volatile, so smell alone is not a reliable way to identify it.

A pool-like smell can indicate free chlorine, but local utility information gives a more reliable answer.
The disinfectant type matters when choosing filtration. Carbon adsorbs free chlorine, while vitamin C reduces both free chlorine and chloramine through a chemical reaction.

The smell depends on the disinfectant used, its concentration and your local supply. Utility data gives a better answer than a national generalisation.
Melbourne
Why Melbourne is the strongest case
Free chlorine at a residual of about 0.76 mg/L. Free chlorine is the volatile one, so if any Australian city is going to give you a shower that smells like a pool, it is this one. If you are in Melbourne and you noticed a smell, you noticed something real.
Sydney
Sydney commonly uses chloramine, which is less volatile than free chlorine. A weak smell does not mean disinfectant is absent.
It also means the smell is a poor test for you. Sydney is a chemistry question rather than a nose question.
Brisbane and Ipswich
South East Queensland is not a chloramine region, despite a few widely shared blog posts that list it as one.
What that means for a Brisbane shower
Free chlorine at about 2 mg/L, the highest free chlorine figure we found among the capitals we could source. If your shower smells, free chlorine is the reason, and the smell test is a good one where you live.
Adelaide
Why your neighbour may get a different answer
SA Water describes a mixed system: chlorine across much of the metropolitan network and chloramine on the long pipelines. Two suburbs away may not have the same answer you do. If you can smell it, you are on free chlorine. If you cannot, that on its own does not tell you much.
Perth
Where the Goldfields fit
Water Corporation uses chloramination in the Goldfields rather than in metropolitan Perth, so a metro shower is on free chlorine and the smell is the volatile kind.
Canberra
If primary utility information is unavailable, contact your local water provider for the current disinfectant used.

Smell can be more noticeable where free chlorine is used, while chloramine may be harder to detect by smell. Check your local supply before choosing a filter.

These smells may have a different cause. Contact your water utility and check its current water-quality advice.
How to test free chlorine in your shower water
Use free-chlorine test strips and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Comparing water before and after installation can give you a practical baseline.
- One. Fill a glass from the shower before you fit anything.
- Two. Fit the filter and run it for a minute.
- Three. Fill a second glass.
- Four. Read both against the colour chart in the same light, and film it without cutting if you want it to count for anything.
Record both readings under the same conditions so you can compare the result clearly.
