Water is the first step of skincare

A more considered approach to shower water

If your goal is a lower-tox routine, shower water is a practical place to make one clear change.

Australian tap water contains a disinfectant residual to keep it safe through the network. SUHAE uses vitamin C at the shower head to reduce free chlorine and chloramine before the water reaches you.

Worth saying plainly

Choose shower filtration for clear, practical reasons

Australian tap water is treated for safe supply. A shower filter is an optional bathroom upgrade for people who want to reduce selected disinfectant compounds at the shower outlet.

Choose a filter by checking your local water, the filtration medium, fitting compatibility, cartridge cost and the evidence behind each product claim.

And why it is there

Why chlorine or chloramine is present in tap water

Water utilities maintain a disinfectant residual to protect water through the supply network.

Australian utilities use free chlorine or chloramine. Free chlorine is more volatile, while chloramine is more stable in the supply. Ascorbic acid reacts chemically with chlorine compounds rather than adsorbing them onto carbon.

The practical question for your shower

Do you want to reduce selected disinfectant compounds at the shower outlet after checking what your local utility uses?

The honest boundary

What a shower filter can and cannot change

Compare the stated filtration scope with your local water and the outcome you want from your shower.

A house in outline with four outlets on one service run. One carries an inline cylinder and unbroken lines below it; the other three have dashed lines.

One outlet, not a house. Solid is filtered; dashed is not.

What it covers

  • Water leaving the shower head it is fitted to, and nothing upstream of that.
  • Free chlorine and chloramine, both reduced chemically by ascorbic acid rather than trapped by carbon.
  • The rinse at the end of a bath, if you use a hand shower for it.

What it does not

  • Your bath. The tub fills from the bath spout, which the filter never touches.
  • Your kitchen tap, your drinking water, and every other outlet in the house.
  • Hardness. It is not a softener and it will not stop limescale.
  • Fluoride, heavy metals, microplastics, or anything else you may have read about in a different product category. We make no claim on any of them.

Where product evidence is limited

  • How much of the residual is actually reduced once the water is moving through a shower rather than sitting in a beaker. No brand in this category publishes that with its conditions attached.
  • Whether reducing it changes anything about skin or hair. There is no study, here or anywhere else in this category.
  • How long a cartridge holds up in your water rather than in a bench test.

All three lists are in the page whether you press anything or not. The media itself is set out separately.

Read this before you buy

Choose a low-tox shower setup with clear expectations

If your goal is to reduce everyday chemical exposure, start by checking what is in your local water and choose filtration that matches it.

Set a practical baseline

Note chlorine smell, cartridge life and your normal shower routine so you have useful points to compare.

What you may notice first

A change in chlorine smell may be the first noticeable result where free chlorine is present. Other experiences vary.

Plan for replacement cartridges

The hardware is reusable, while cartridges are replaced as they are used.

Compare refill cost and replacement timing

A filter you stop replacing is a fitting with old media in it. Look at the refill price and the replacement interval before you look at the hardware price. Our guide to choosing one works through it.

Look for evidence behind every claim

Check the test conditions behind removal figures so you can compare products fairly.

Choose transparent product information

Look for clear refill pricing, replacement guidance and testing details before you buy.

And check what you have got. Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra are soft, Brisbane and Adelaide moderately hard, Perth anything from very soft to hard by suburb. A filter bought on a national story is a filter bought on somebody else's water, so look yours up.

Other people, not us

What people report

Australian reviews of shower filters, across brands. Not Suhae reviews, and not a forecast.

I genuinely didn't realise how harsh normal shower water smelled until it was gone.

One person's experience, from a verified Australian review of a shower filter.

The first thing I noticed was the chlorine smell disappearing almost instantly.

Also one person, also verified, also not a promise about your shower.

Why those two and not a glowing one

The smell is the only effect here that is immediate, sensory and reported by almost everybody.

And we do hold the glowing ones

Everything else takes weeks and has a dozen competing explanations. We have those quotes. We are not going to use them to sell you something you arrived here without needing.

If you want proof rather than a review

Free chlorine test strips cost a few dollars at a pool shop. A glass before, a glass after, both read against the chart in the same light.

We are not telling you what the two glasses will look like, because the whole point of the strip is that you do not have to take our word for it. More on the smell and the test.

Including the parts that do not go our way

Three checks before choosing a low-tox shower filter

If fragrance is what you are avoiding

Universal comes as three care cartridges rather than a scent range: Sensitive-Skin Care, Deep-Hydrate Care and Scalp-Soothe Care.

If you are avoiding fragrance, confirm the ingredients and scent status of the selected Universal cartridge with us before ordering.

Knowing when the cartridge is spent

Universal cartridge life is not currently published. Ask our team for the latest product guidance before ordering replacements.

There is no indicator either, which is why the strips above are worth the few dollars. If a reading has drifted back, unscrewing it takes about a minute.

Check certification at product level

SUHAE does not claim NSF/ANSI 177 certification.

Verify the exact product model, standard, certificate number and certifying body in the public database.

The one figure this brand does publish: chlorine not detected from 1,000 to 6,000 litres, KEWI IW-230133. Issued April 2023 by the Korea Environment and Water Works Institute, against the Aromica Vita C filter. Ask us for the conditions.

If it is worth it to you

Keep your current showerhead and add SUHAE filtration

SUHAE Universal installs behind a compatible showerhead without drilling or permanent pipework and can be removed later.
